Funeral Flower Etiquette: A Gentle Guide

Funeral Flower Etiquette: A Gentle Guide

Funeral flowers are a deeply meaningful tradition, but if you've never ordered them before, it's natural to have questions. Should you send flowers at all? What type is appropriate? When should they arrive? This guide answers the most common questions around funeral flower etiquette, so you can focus on what matters most.

Should You Send Funeral Flowers?

Flowers are a widely accepted and appreciated gesture of sympathy and respect in the UK. However, some families request "no flowers" — often in favour of charitable donations — and this will usually be noted in the funeral notice. Always follow the family's wishes. If no preference is stated, flowers are entirely appropriate.

Who Sends Funeral Flowers?

Funeral flowers can be sent by anyone who wishes to pay their respects — close family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, or community groups. There are no strict rules about who should or shouldn't send flowers. If you feel moved to do so, it's always a kind gesture.

What Type of Flowers Are Appropriate?

Traditional funeral flowers in the UK tend towards whites, creams, and soft pastels — colours associated with peace and dignity. That said, there are no hard rules, and many families now welcome colourful, celebratory arrangements that reflect the personality of the person who has passed.

Common choices include:

  • Wreaths — a classic, respectful choice suitable for anyone
  • Sprays and sheaves — elegant arrangements often chosen by close family
  • Posies — smaller tributes, often sent by friends or colleagues
  • Personalised tributes — letters, hearts, or shapes that reflect the individual

When Should Flowers Arrive?

Funeral flowers can be delivered to the funeral director or to the family home — it depends on the family's wishes and the type of tribute. Depending on the schedule, funeral tributes from direct family members almost always are delivered to the funeral director to travel in the hearse. If there is a procession leaving from the family home, all other tributes may be asked to be delivered there. If you're unsure, it's always worth checking with the family or funeral director beforehand.

We recommend ordering at least 48–72 hours before the service where possible. If you need flowers at shorter notice, please contact us directly and we'll do our best to help.

Fresh or Silk — Does It Matter?

Both are perfectly appropriate. Fresh flowers are the traditional choice for the service itself, while silk tributes are increasingly popular for gravesides and as lasting memorials. Some families choose both. See our guide to fresh vs silk funeral tributes for more detail.

Is It Too Late to Send Flowers After the Funeral?

It's never too late to show you care. If you missed the funeral or weren't able to order in time, a sympathy bouquet sent to the family home in the days or weeks afterwards is a thoughtful and welcome gesture. Grief doesn't end after the service, and a kind gesture later can mean just as much.
